From a soccer field under attack, turned into a war movie sketch, to the gongfu moves on the soccer field where turf and clothes equally go flying--everything is so delightfully kua zhang exaggerated.

The only reason I'm not rating 5 stars is for the lower production value and some unconvincingly awkward chemistry between characters.

Letitia L Super Reviewer. Jun 04, The work of Stephen Chow seems to be both of respect and innovation through comedy. The fact that his films of the past decade introduced Kung Fu as a discipline capable of unrealistic physical and spiritual wonders confirms his vision to be that of comedy rather than spoof, because the essence of martial arts remains there.

Incorporating that to modern settings is an idea beyond ridiculous that few studios with any sanity remnant would accept consciously, including the cheap CGI aspects which suckness is compensated almost completely by the creativity involved in something seemingly superficial, yet actually humble.

Still, the film delivers what it originally set out to do, with a no-holds-barred energy and enthusiasm that so many movies are lacking today.

The argument that the film pays homage through comedy can be confirmed with the prolonged version, and not the chopped U. The first of a four volume Shaolin Soccer manhua was published in Hong Kong roughly nine months after the film originally premiered in The characters were drawn with large manga -like eyes and cartoonish bodies, but the artists were careful to retain the likenesses of each actor who portrayed them.

ComicsOne approached noted comic book artist Andy Seto with the idea of creating a two volume manhua -style graphic novel adaptation of the feature film.

Seto attached himself to the project because the film was very popular and, therefore, had "a certain level of marketing value".

Their suggested reading level was age 13 and above. Seto worked to make the novel as faithful to the film as possible but he admits that Stephen Chow's brand of Mo lei tau comedy does not translate well into illustrations.

For example, in the film a group of bar thugs beat up Sing and Iron Head after listening to their lounge -style tribute to Shaolin kung fu.

The following day, Sing seeks out the group and uses his Shaolin skills to beat the thugs using a soccer ball. Fung sees the brawl and comes up with the idea of fusing kung fu and soccer.

However, in the comic book, Sing is meditating in the park when he gets hit in the head with a soccer ball. The cocky players mock him and destroy a stone statue of his deceased master.

Sing proceeds to use the soccer ball as a weapon. Another example is the fact the characters are visually different from the film.

All of their comic book personas look to be in their twenties to thirties, with highly toned athletic physiques with the exception of Light Weight ; even Iron Head, who was the eldest of the six brothers, appears younger than he should.

Several online reviews have criticised the American adaptation for its apparent lack of story line coherence, mixture of realistic and cartoonish drawing styles, and bad Chinese-to-English translation, among other issues.

In regards to the translation, one reviewer stated, "It's almost as if the book was translated with a first-year English student referencing a Chinese-to-English dictionary, with strangely assembled sentences and strange bursts of dialogue peppering the pages.

Without this familiarity, a newcomer would lose track of the storyline because of the overcrowded pages and rapidly shifting plot.

After a fateful mistake costing his career, an ex-soccer player bum meets a shaolin kung fu student trying to spread the word of kung fu.

The ex-soccer player helps reconcile with his five brothers, and teaches them soccer, adding shaolin kung fu as a twist. Written by ravedragon.

Stephen Chow writes, directs and stars in probably his funniest and most accessible to Western audiences, at least film to date.

Sing Chow is trying to find a way to encourage his countrymen to re-embrace their Shaolin kung fu heritage. When he meets down-at-heel ex-soccer coach Fung Ng , the pair hatch a plan to form a soccer team with Sing's Shaolin brothers.

Unfortunately, these guys have lost their kung fu skills. Sing resolves to help his brothers regain their dignity, then lead them into a championship showdown with the seemingly unstoppable Evil Team.

He also finds time to fall in love with Tai-Chi baker Mui the usually lovely Vicki Zhao , who gets some of the funniest scenes in the movie. As a non-Chinese speaker, my experience with Chow's previous films is patchy, his wordplay humour rarely making a decent transition to subtitles.

The comedy here though is mostly physical, possibly even deliberately geared more towards a Western market. Even the CG is impressive and well used.

It's the most entertaining movie I've seen in ages. I was watching the Universe DVD. Subs are decent enough, without too many typos, and the 'making of' and other extras have English subs also.

Sing's team's test game against a rival neighborhood team turns into a humiliating debacle. The last match before the finals turns out to be a little more difficult than the team expected.
